Longboard Koa Model

Surf Art in Wood and a Unique Hawaiian Gift

LONGBOARD CIRCA 1964

My passion for surfing began in 1960 when my family moved from Connecticut to southern California. Starting at Cardiff Reef I spent the next four years negotiating with my Dad to take me up and down the coast to spots I heard about at school and on the radio. Returning to Connecticut in 1964 I brought my Hansen 9’0” board back with me, got a driver’s license a year later, and wandered all over New England exploring places like Point Judith, the Cape, Narraggansett, Matunuck, and the Newport beaches. We got as far north as New Hampshire and down to the New Jersey shore once. For years I never forgave my Dad for moving us back. Now I realize what an adventure we had, just a few kids doing it first and sometimes doing it very cold. These boards are a tribute to those years and to many of my friends back then who never made it out to where I have the great good fortune to live, here on the Big Island. I get out at our local spot four or five days a week. Surfing remains a huge part of my life.

With these two small surfboards, I’ve come up with what I intend to be the perfect gift for the deskbound surfer, to remind them of the next vacation or just to reminisce about some epic sessions back when. These boards are made of bookmatched Koa. With the rocker shaped in, maple stringer(s), and an old school birch skeg they are as close as you are going to get to the real thing in 16” or 18”. The tail block is done in Purpleheart for a truly classic finish. They are available with either a desk mount or a wall mount system, also done in Koa both of which have a brass plaque on which is engraved “VINTAGE LONGBOARD 1964”. Enjoy!
